Shopping in EnsenadaRosarito Beach
Mexican craftsmanship is legendary. Shops where you can choose from an array of hand carved wooden or custom wrought iron tables, chairs and bar stools, equipale furniture, and armoires abound on Rosarito’s main street. Choose a sofa and have it upholstered in hand woven Mexican fabric.  Many shops carry the best of Mexico's fine arts, clothing and leather goods.

Attention Surf Dudettes and Dudes

Kevin Cochran, originally from Houston, Texas has been surfing this coast from Northern California to the tip of South America almost all of his 50 plus years. He speaks fluent Spanish, with a Texas twang, and has an instant rapport with many locals because he understands their culture and speaks their language. Below are some hints on surfing this popular surfing destination.

Cochran fell in love here, married here, and raised his family coming to the area frequently, including his very own Puerto Nuevo love child. Later this month we will add photos of exits to take to get to these spots and photos of the recent local surf.

Starting on the toll road, just south of the Real Del Mar overpass, you will see and the first surf spot exit at Baja Malibu.

Baja Malibu
Powerful, hollow beach break. Takes any swell direction, peakier on combo swells, good on any tide. Best size 3-8 ft, tends to close out if larger. Popular tow in spot when big. Not for novices.

Rosarito pier and beach breaks
Best on combo swells, 3-6ft. Medium tide is the best.

Popotla
Left reef/point break into bay. Best on W or NW swell. Can hold up to 10-15 ft, needs to be 6 ft before it really breaks. Peak in front of jagged rock point, can be dicey at smaller size. Cold water Padang Padang.

Calafia
Large classic point, can be all time on large south swells.

Rickey's
At base of Calafia point, right reef break. Works from 3-6 feet. Good little zipper of a wave. Medium tide to high tide best. Shallow, rocks, closes out over 6 feet.

Teresa's
K37 Cobblestone rock reef rivermouth. Right hander, can be 200 yd wave when good. Best on west or northwest swell. All tides ok, but major rock dance at low tide. Gets really good and can hold up to 10-12 feet.

K38
Classic point break, best on south and west swell, low to medium tide. Can hold a large swell 10-15 foot, with 300 yard rides all the way into the cove. Long paddle access from campo south of Teresa's, open ocean conditions, can be dicey if large swell. Best at 4-6 ft +. Best wave in the area.

Salsipuedes Bay
Reef, point break combo. Takes all swells. Triangular reef out front breaks right and left, holds up to 8-10 ft. Good on any tide. When larger, over 10 ft, swell wraps large right point and rifles down the point similar to Kirra point in Austrailia. Can be incredible. Several kilometers south of Mirador lookout.

San Miguel
At end of toll road at north side of Ensenada. Classic right point, cobblestone rock bottom. 3 ft + and can hold large swell. Really good wave, can get crowded due to high visability and easy access. Have respect for the locals here.K58 or Playa Los Alisitos

Los Alisitos is popular for its fairly reliable waves. Breaks from 1' to 6'+. You can generally expect decent water quality. Also has a nice stretch of beach any time of year where you can usually find an uncrowded peak.  Long paddle in large surf. Surf frequency is very consistent (150 day/year) and the site has modern shower and toilet facilities. Surfing equipment is available at the nearby Surf Shop for those who come unprepared.
